Generally yes, It is based on your intentions. If you go, knowing that you will be given a beneficial education along with others then it is even encouraged, but if you go so that you can mess around, then it is not. Just as in life you will almost certainly mix with the other gender, and since it is expected, you will not be punished per say, instead you will be tested, and your actions are what counts, education is no exception.
