Good day, brothers and sisters. I've recently been struck with a piece of knowledge: music is haram in Islam. I've checked a couple websites and they all seemed to support the music is haram. Now, I don't quite understand this. There are articles about how music drives a person's mind away from the Creator, and that music causes inappropriate feelings to arise, such as arousal and such. I don't quite understand this because neither to I feel distant from God while listening to music, nor do I get aroused. If anything, music calms my mind when I feel inappropriate feelings. And when I listen to music, I KNOW that it was God who give musicians the ability to make music. Can someone pleas clarify this for me? Listening to music is the only thing I find joyful in life. Finding out that the one thing I love the most in life is a sin is devastating. It's like being best friends with someone, only to find out years later that that person was plotting your downfall all along. |

Aslamu alyakum Jook. What you have said is incorrect . The message of Islam is the same for all messengers. However, the sharia is not the same. If the case was that something was allowed with a certain messenger, then it is for him and for his nation. The sharia of the nation of prophet muhammed saws was different then from other nations. In addition The view that Dawood (peace be upon him) used to seek forgiveness by playing the flute or instrument or music is a view for which there is no basis, rather what is meant by the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) to Abu Moosa al-Ash’ari , “You have been given a beautiful voice (mizmaar, lit. flute) like the beautiful voices of the family of Dawood” (narrated by al-Bukhaari (5048) and Muslim (793) is that he had a beautiful voice, and the beauty of his voice was likened to the sound of the flute. “[Allaah said to Iblees:] And befool them gradually those whom you can among them with your voice (i.e. songs, music, and any other call for Allaah’s disobedience)…” [al-Israa’ 17:64] It was reported from Anas (may Allaah be pleased with him) in a marfoo’ report: “In this ummah there will be landslides, stones falling from heaven and transformation (of humans into monkeys, etc.). This will happen when alcohol is drunk, when people bring in female singers and play musical instruments.” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi). The exception to the above is the daff – without any rings (i.e., a hand-drum which looks like a tambourine, but without any rattles) – when used by women on Eids and at weddings. This is indicated by saheeh reports. Strive to learn your Islam from the Book of your Lord and the Sunnah of your Prophet. Do not say, So-and-so said, for you cannot learn the truth only from men. Learn the truth and then measure people against it. Alan knows best |

There are some limitations to be observed in the matter of singing:
Source: http://www.islamawareness.net/Music/music_fatwa005.html Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 7.494B Narrated by Abu Amir or Abu Malik Al Ashari that he heard the Prophet (S.A.W) saying, "From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful.” Holy Qur'an says, And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e.music, singing, etc.) to mislead (men) from the Path of Allah without knowledge, and takes it (the Path of Allah, the Verses of the Quran) by way of mockery. For such there will be a humiliating torment (in the Hell-fire). [Holy Qur'an 31:6] Not every kind of music is Halal or Haram. There are many conditions to it. And no sensible Muslim can say that our Holy Prophet (S.A.W) have allowed every kind of music i.e. vulgar, leads to sin, against the teachings of Islam, in praise of haram things or in conjunction with haram activities. And I think we all have sung our respective National Anthem when we were in schools, right? (Without Music Instruments) |

Thank you. Finally, someone with actual proof behind his words. Though the phrase "idle talk" sounds more like gossiping and fake rumors. 90% of the music I listen to don't even have lyrics, so I should be good to go, right? All Praise and Thanks be to Allah. Last thing I want to quote is that, even if the song contains fake rumors they are not allowed and I have also quoted the conditions for lyrics as well in my answer. But as you listen totally music (sound) without lyrics then I have to inform you brother that in Islam only the music of "Daff" is allowed and no other musical instrument i.e. guitars, orchestra and piano etc. So, you better select the song/music which you want to listen :) It just so happened that you seem like a genius. May Allah bless you and your family. All Praise and Thanks be to Allah (S.W.T). Ameen and May Allah (S.W.T) bless you and your family as well. :) |

You can listen to music if there is no sound or drum, piano as the Prophet forbid us from listening to drum, musical instrument.so think of any song that doesnt have sound.THINK twice.also the time use in listening to it should be spent praising Allah subhana wat'ala. Praise Allah subhana wat'ala, one get reward but doing what is unlawful one will be punished |

Okay you guys that are trying to make things impermissible which Allah has not forbidden, you are disobeying Him. And honestly, no singing? okay, have you even read EXODUS chapter 15? -_- Psalm 105:2 "Sing praises to Him; speak of all His wondrous acts." scripture uses the word "sing" there, not recite. "psalms" - "zamar" in hebrew - give praise, sing forth praises. see, you feel the desire to lie on the internet don't you? one of the words for "sing" (in praise to the Lord) is ranan in hebrew. to SHOUT - aloud for joy, cry out, be joyful, rejoice, shout (for joy), (cause to) sing (aloud, for joy, out) triumph. so yeah, if you wanna go ahead and be a reserved little person who calls them self a "muslim" and not emphasize the true greatness of our Creator, then to you is your practice and to me is mine. AL HAMDILLAH HALLELUJAH ALL praise be to God. |

How did a discussion about whether music is halal or haram turn into a debate whether hadiths are credible or not? People in my country not only rely on hadiths, but also on books by Said Nursi and Fethullah Gülen. As a result, I believe that we shouldn't solely rely on what is said in the Quran. And by the way, I've asked numerous Muslim people around me, not even one of them supported that music is haram. They all shared my view; music, as a whole, is not haram, but there are certain kinds of songs whose lyrics aren't appropriate for listening. |

music is not a sin in Islam. whomever says this has to bring proof from Quran. its a historical fact that our prophet has organized musical events during his reign. he liked it very much. many great Muslims in history are big fans of music. plus the art of music has developed in great deal in Muslim countries (arabia, persia, turkey, ethiopia, eritrea, pakistan etc). would music develop in these countries if it was haram? use your logic! |

Why are you relating (all types of) music to our Holy Prophet (S.A.W) without any knowledge. Only the limited types of innocent singing or chanting without any instrumental accompaniment or to the accompaniment of a simple hand drum (daff) on certain occasions designated by the Sunnah. There are conditions which I am going to quote in my answer, And please write (S.A.W) or a short durood after writing Holy Prophet (S.A.W) i will write whatever i like. stop trying to enforce the rules onto people that you have no idea about. thats the job for Catholics 1
If you are a muslim and you deliberately said you will write what ever you want then you be held accountable by Allah for what you write. Rather she is advising you. So I ask you sincerely to not get yourself in any more danger than you are in. Islam is not a religion of opinion. You have your right to post anything, but Allah will judge you for your actions. Most of the things I see you write are not according to Islam. And if someone lies against Allah and his messenger then how you consider him to be a Muslim. We are Muslims so inshallah if you can heed are advice. you are the one with opinions, not me. i can prove everything i said with Quran, while you on the other hand try to refute me with hadiths and sunnaths. i dont need to remind myself of my own respect for my own prophet just by writing salavat everytime i write his name. my respect comes from within, not from empty shows of faithfulness on websites. i dont think this will send me to hell. judgement only belongs to Allah. you are going against this rule everytime you judge me on the basis of religion. think about that. @Light Absolutely right. Pargali is showing his level of knowledge, he is not even a beginner's level. May Allah (S.W.T) guide him. @pargali you can not say whatever you want because we talk here on religion and I really don't need to know who you are because your comments are already showing it. Check my comment I have provided Hadith (S.A.W) as well as Quranic Verse and pretty much people have understood it but you didn't. Ok, so you ask everything from Qur'an then I'm afraid that no where in Qur'an the procedure of Salaah is mentioned so will you leave offering compulsory Salaah? Regarding the importance of salavat every time the name of Holy Prophet (S.A.W) is taken, can be understood by a detail hadith (S.A.W) reported from Kaab Ibn Ujrah (RA), I will only provide ruling regarding this issue "Destruction to him before whom thy name is taken and then he does not make Dua for Allah's blessing on me (by saying, for example SAW)." Holy Prophet (S.A.W) replied 'Aameen'. detail hadith (S.A.W) is provided here,

There we go, two completely different answers. Which one of you should I trust? On the one hand, it sounds really stupid to say that music is haram, because obviously many great religious people listen to music, and I'm sure our Property (SAV) wasn't against music. And how can you compare music to masturbation and pornography? Sounds to me like you're just a music hater. I've come across many people who claim a particular thing is haram in Islam just because they themselves don't like it. I've consulted my elders (parents, uncle, grandparents) regarding this matter, and they say that music itself is not haram, but listening to music whose lyrics include a lot of swear words and negative religious remarks is haram. |

You say I offended him? Well, you're offending me right now by giving me probably false knowledge. Give me proof that music is a sin. Mentioning God's name when making a statement doesn't necessarily make that statement true and credible. |
|
|
Or maybe music is a sin in particular mazhabs. That's what I'm understanding from this debate, because some say it is haram and some say it is halal. Again, my parents say it is halal, and I trust their judgment because they are not idlers, alhamdulillah they perform the Islamic obligations. |
