Wearing of wedding rings

Does the use of wedding rings have any significance in Islam?

I haven't seen mention of it anywhere but I am not an expert. However, men cannot wear gold and their ring should be silver. It may be good if you are a female and want to show to the world you are married. However, spening thousands of dollars on this may not be good.
