What is the origin of the prayer rug?

1	I'm a writing a paper on religion, and I'd like to know what the origin of the prayer rug is. Why is it used? When was it first used/ when did it become a part of Islam? Furthermore when is it used? Any and all times when praying, or just at the mosque?
